A Canadian miner has expanded a solar plant it set up at its gold operation in Mali by adding tens of thousands more panels to increase its renewable energy output. B2Gold Corp confirmed that Phase 2 of the Fekola Solar Plant expansion was completed in Q4 2024 and became operational in January.
The solar-plus-storage facility will reduce heavy fuel oil consumption by 13.1 million liters per year. German renewable energy company Baywa re and solar developer Suntrace GmbH have completed construction on a 30 MW/15.4 MWh solar-plus-storage plant at the Fekola gold mine owned by Canadian gold.

The Fekola gold mine in Mali, will reduce energy costs, CO2 emissions and increase power reliability with the addition of 35MWp of PV and 17MW/15MWh of energy storage to the existing 64MW thermal engine plant. Wärtsilä and B2Gold will describe how there is no compromise for mining microgrids–reduce.
Suntrace GmbH and BayWa r.e., together with B2Gold Corp. (CA), have completed commissioning of the world’s largest off-grid solar-battery hybrid system for the mining industry, at the Fekola gold mine in Mali, West Africa. The solar-battery hybrid plant was integrated and commissioned successfully.
